Composer: Robert Ward
Robert Ward wrote, “The City of Oaks overture was commissioned by the North Carolina Symphony to celebrate the opening of Raleigh’s new Convention Center in September 2008. The title describes the abundance of great trees along the city’s streets and the civic pride of its citizens. My work is scored for full orchestra and will, I hope, befit a splendid occasion.”
Ward said that he filled City of Oaks with “brilliant and brave sound,” and constructed it in a compact sonata form based on a first theme built from pyramiding chords and a more lyrical second subject.
